The fundamental objective of music education at Agora Sant Cugat International School is to provide pupils with an active music experience. At our international school music education goes beyond the classroom and is part of our everyday life. Our pupils receive a high level music education that goes beyond the demands of the official curriculum offering them great benefits which will contribute to their academic and personal development.

In addition to the official and obligatory curriculum, all our pupils learn to play at least one musical instrument (piano, violin, viola, violoncello, etc.), develop their vocal skills until 6th Primary and perform regularly in the different concerts which are programmed each year. They also have the opportunity to belong to the school orchestra or choir groups, since Agora Sant Cugat International School has a school band, an orchestra, and a choir.

Within the curriculum, the pupils have 2 hours of music a week. From 1st Primary onwards the pupils play 1 string instrument, and in 3rd Primary they start with a wind instrument, or continue with string. Thanks to our link with the Liceu Conservatory, our music project follows the evaluation and scheduling criteria of this prestigious music school, something which gives pupils the chance to participate in different activities, events and concerts organised by the Conservatory. Furthermore, those pupils who wish to do so can obtain the Elementary Diploma of the Liceu Conservatory, and the possibility to go on to do Advanced Level studies.

Music, and its inherent self-discipline and effort, sensitivity, order, precision, and teamwork, blends naturally with the different areas of school life, being part of academic life, education, and personal relationships.

Music is part of our identity as a school. Through it we enrich our pupils’ sensitivity and emotions, it provides self-discipline, team work, auditory discrimination, and accuracy, among other values. The performances and activities scheduled during the school year foster relationships and co-operative work among the pupils. Throughout the academic year, the pupils participate in the school’s Christmas, spring, and end-of-year performances, as well as in the NACE group International Music Week, among others.

WHAT THOSE INVOLVED HAVE TO SAY

“Respect, attention, listening, creativity, effort, teamwork, discipline… At Agora Sant Cugat International School, experiencing music plays a fundamental role in education. The different music subjects reinforce these values in a fun and playful way, and provide pupils with new experiences. In the department, we think it is essential that the pupils actively live music in all its forms. For us, it’s fantastic to sense how they are developing in all areas (personal, academic, cultural, and social), and how they are discovering and enjoying a new world around them.

All of these objectives are reflected in the different instrumental groups, the band and the orchestra. Groups which participate annually in International Music Festivals in which we share knowledge and values with other schools.

The link with the Liceu Conservatoire is academic reinforcement of the commitment to the pupils’ music education. These new experiences transcend the classroom and continue into to the personal life of each person, both pupils and ours.”“Respect, attention, listening, creativity, effort, teamwork, discipline… At Agora Sant Cugat International School, experiencing music plays a fundamental role in education.
